Leavenworth Vacation 2007

Welcome to our first vacation in seven years. Below is a synopsis of all that we did so I hope you will all enjoy yourself as you travel along with us.

On August 9, 2007 we went to Leavenworth, Washington for my niece's wedding on the 11th. We couldn't go Leavenworth just for the wedding, I had to see some of the other sites in the vicinity. After checking into our motel which was 15 miles out of town, we went back into Leavenworth to see some of the stores and to have dinner at King Lugwig's, a German restaurant. A friend who lives in the Netherlands and who goes to Germany a couple of times a year told me we just had to try German food. It was very good. Hank and I got a sampler platter for two. For two!!!! It could have fed three, at least. Forgetting that my friend told me that German's are hearty eaters Heather ordered her own plate. Even she couldn't finish it all. We had so much food left over that we had to take some home. Good thing we took our ice chest along.

Friday, August 10th, we went to Cashmere to the Liberty Orchards candy factory where they make their famous Aplets and Cotlets. We were able to take the tour of the factory to see how that delicious candy is made. We also went to the Pioneer Village and Museum. A wonderful place and very nostalgic. While in Cashmere we had to check out the town. Cashmere is a very small quaint town. I especially wanted to go see the authentic soda fountain at the pharmacy. I was disappointed. It wasn't what I was expecting to see but we did get an ice cream soda. It was a very warm day so that tasted really good.

Cashmere Washington

If you have any big shopping to do you have to go to Wenatchee, about 15 miles east of Cashmere.

On the way back to Leavenworth we had planned to stop at Apple Annie's Antique Store but they were closed. There was a restaurant next door to Apple Annie's called Studebaker's so we went in and got an old fashioned hamburger. Boy, do they pile on the condiments. It was very good and brought back some good memories of the 50's and 60's.

Saturday, August 11th, was the wedding. The church was beautiful, the decorations were beautiful and the bride was gorgeous. Both the bride and groom are from small towns and they both just graduated from Northwest Nazarene University so the church was packed with family and friends. The reception was held outside and was decorated beautifully. We didn't know half of the people there but we had a good time anyway. I was so busy taking pictures and visiting with cousins I hadn't seen in 27 years that I didn't eat much. The cake was white and chocolate and was very good.

Sunday, August 12th, we went to Wenatchee, Washington, to Ohme (pronounced oh-me) Gardens. It is a beautiful garden built entirely out of natural materials. Limestone walks and benches, serene secluded ponds that are so relaxing you hate to leave it. The paths go uphill and downhill and over looks the Columbia River and Wenatchee. It's a very beautiful place.

We were able to stop at Apple Annie's. It's a huge store, with many many vendors. I told Heather it would take a week to see it all. I didn't see anything there I couldn't live without. We saw a small portion and then went down to another antique store where Heather and I spent to much money. But isn't that what antique stores are for?

Monday, August 13th, we had to go home. We went back into Leavenworth to see a few more stores that we weren't able to see on Thursday night. We had the most delicious brunch at the Cafe Christa. I had never had a Monte Cristo sandwich so I was able to try one. It's very good. The desserts were out of this world.

Heather loves the nutcracker from the ballet The Nutcracker, so we had to go into the Nutcracker store. A most enchanting place. They also have a museum that has over 5000 nutcrackers, some from as far back as the 1600's. It was getting late so we didn't take the time to go through the museum. Someday we have to go back just so Heather can go through the museum. Should be very interesting.

Hank wanted an ice cream cone so we got his cone (and ours) and went over to the grandstand area under this most gorgeous weeping willow tree and ate our ice cream. Then we had to get on the road. We got to Heather's about 8:30pm. Since it was getting late and I didn't feel like driving another three hours home we spent the night with her. We got home Tuesday evening.

I have many pictures of each place that we went so you best grab a cup coffee, sit back and go on vacation to Leavenworth, Cashmere and Wenatchee, Washington.
